Honey and Vinegar Remedies

Proponents of folk remedies have asserted that Mother Nature is one of the best sources for treatments to combat common ailments. Vinegar and honey are examples of ingredients frequently found in such home cures. However, while there are some studies that indicate there may be a kernel of truth to some of these claims, you should always consult with a physician before undertaking a home-cure regimen.
  1. Honey Cough Remedy

    • A 2007 study by Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine shows that honey may be an effective cough suppressant in young children. Two teaspoons of honey should be given at bedtime for kids with upper respiratory tract infections. However, the Mayo Clinic warns that honey should not be given to children under one, due to the risk of infant botulism.

    Cider Vinegar Weight Loss Remedy

    • Apple cider vinegar purportedly can help with weight loss when combined with exercise. Add 2 tsp. of organic apple cider vinegar to 16 oz. of water and sip it throughout the day rather than all at once. This helps keep the body's pH constant. If you drink a lot of water, add a small splash of the vinegar to the glass each time you refill.

    Sore Throat Remedy

    • A longtime folk remedy to reduce the inflammation that causes sore throat combines apple cider vinegar, honey and cayenne pepper. Combine 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 3 tbsp. of clover honey in a warm glass of water and gargle as needed. The acid in the vinegar purportedly kills bacteria, while the cayenne increases circulation to the affected area. The honey helps mitigate the taste of the vinegar and pepper.

    Multi-Purpose Elixir

    • An elixir of apple cider vinegar, raw honey and garlic can seemingly aid sufferers of arthritis, asthma, hypertension, hemorrhoids, toothaches and ulcers by stimulating the immune system. Place 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 cup of raw honey, and 8 cloves of garlic into a blender. Mix on high speed for 60 seconds. Pour the mixture into a glass container, cover and refrigerate for five days. Add 2 tsp. of the mixture to a glass of water or fruit juice and take before breakfast.
