How to Treat Arthritis With a Comfrey Poultice

Arthritis is a disorder that causes inflammation in the joints, the places where two bones meet within the body. Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, inflammation, tenderness and warmth. There are many kinds of arthritis, including gout, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Comfrey is an herb traditionally celebrated as an arthritis remedy. According to "Rodale's Encyclopedia of Natural Home Remedies," it soothes and heals inflamed tissues while reducing the pain and swelling caused by arthritis.

  • Comfrey leaves
  • Mortar and pestle
  • Gauze bandage
  • Large spoon
  • Teaspoon

Instructions

      Use a mortar and pestle to crush fresh comfrey leaves.

      Crush four or five fresh comfrey leaves with a mortar and pestle until fine.

      Gauze bandages

      Spread the ground leaves on a gauze bandage using a large spoon. Add 3 to 5 teaspoons of water to the leaves to make a paste.

      Safety pin

      Bind the bandage to the arthritis-afflicted area. Use a safety pin to secure it.

      Leave the bandage on overnight. Cover it with plastic wrap, if desired, to prevent sheet staining.

      Comfrey plant

      Take off the bandage in the morning. Repeat the procedure nightly for two weeks or until the pain is gone.
