Folk Remedies: Nutmeg & Honey for Scars
Honey has been hailed for centuries as a folk remedy for many things, from colds to sore throats to acne. Nutmeg, found in almost everyone's pantry, is also praised for its healing effects. When the two ingredients are put together, they can act as a powerful treatment for scarring.-
Scientific Evidence
-
Many medical studies verify the healing properties of honey. One study, published in the "British Journal of Surgery," reported that honey not only had an antibiotic effect and kept wounds sterile, but it also helped with the formation of new tissue at the wound site.
Nutmeg (myristica fragrans) has also been the subject of medical studies. "The International Journal of Cosmetic Science" reported that, when nutmeg was tested with other plants, it was found to be important in the role of preventing the degradation of human tissue, and the prevention of aging effects on the skin.
Putting It Together
-
Put the honey and nutmeg together and you have a powerful "folk" remedy for scarring. To make up your own remedy for use, mix 1 tsp. of nutmeg into 1 tsp. of honey. Stir well, and then apply the mixture to the scars. Leave the mixture on the scarred area for at least 30 minutes. The longer you can leave it on, the more effective the treatment will be. Rinse well with lukewarm water when finished. Apply to the scarred area at least three times per week. You should notice results within 2 weeks.
When you first apply the mixture, you may feel a stinging sensation. If your skin appears to be reacting to the treatment with redness, inflammation and itching, then you may want to discontinue the use of honey and nutmeg as a scar treatment.
