Is Apple Cider Vinegar Good for Weight Loss?

If you have tried every diet on the market, exercised until you ache everywhere and still don't see a change when you stand on the scale, you might try apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a home remedy used for a variety of conditions, including weight loss.
  1. Types

    • Use raw apple cider vinegar, not the pasteurized kind. This type of apple cider vinegar is organic vinegar and still contains the mother of vinegar that pasteurization destroys. While there is only anecdotal evidence that this works better, most people feel that the mother of vinegar in the apple cider vinegar gives you the weight loss benefits.

    Function

    • Get your body up to speed. Most people who use apple cider vinegar believe that it increases metabolism, or helps the body to work more efficiently and therefore burn calories faster. Others think that apple cider vinegar is a fat burner and appetite suppressant. Either way, it has been a health tonic for years.

    Features

    • Studies show that apple cider vinegar reduces the post meal rise in glucose levels in diabetics. A study at Arizona State shows that people with Type 2 diabetes who took 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar at bedtime, lowered their fasting glucose rate. Other studies show that apple cider vinegar also lowered cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

    Considerations

    • Mix the apple cider vinegar with water. Put 2 tbsp. of vinegar in a glass of water and sip it, don't gulp it down. Make it last a long time. Drink eight of glasses of water a day and make sure that three of these contain the apple cider vinegar. Eat a balanced diet and exercise. Others believe that you should mix 2 tbsp. of vinegar with 2 tsp. of honey and take it daily to lower weight.

    Warning

    • Take care if you have certain problems. Apple cider vinegar is an acidic liquid that may cause damage to tooth enamel, the mouth and esophagus. Avoid tooth enamel damage by swishing water in your mouth after you drink the mixture. Never take the apple cider vinegar full strength as the acidity burns your esophagus. Check with your doctor to make sure that the apple cider vinegar doesn't interact with your medication.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Create your own inexpensive apple cider vinegar. Mix 1/4 cup of the more expensive organic vinegar with a gallon of store bought pasteurized apple cider vinegar. Allow the bottle to set two months so the mother of vinegar grows. You can use this in place of organic vinegar and save money.
