Old Time Hair Growth Remedies

A variety of factors leads to thin brittle hair and hair loss, such as poor diet, stress, and harsh chemicals used in dyes, perms, and hair straighteners. People would rather have thick healthy hair, and a variety of home-spun treatments have been developed to achieve this. Furthermore, some men feel that baldness is a disease that must be cured and have attempted to do so throughout history. If your hair is less than ideal, some old-time hair growth remedies may help your hair grow thick and healthy.
  1. Ancient Egyptian Method

    • According to the Hair Loss Learning Center, in 1,500 B.C. the ancient Egyptians had a cure for baldness. First, you must recite a magic spell to the sun god. Second, you must eat onions, iron, red lead, and alabaster. Eating onions and iron-rich foods can't hurt, since they are a part of a balanced healthy diet. Unbeknown to the ancient Egyptians, lead is a health hazard. Alabaster is gypsum rock, which drywall is made out of. It may not be wise to ingest rocks. No scientific evidence supports the ancient Egyptian method of growing hair.

    Proteins

    • An anecdotal account is to eat food high in protein and biotin, such as eggs and gelatin desserts. Since hair is protein based, the logic is protein will help it grow. Another account is to apply raw eggs to the hair and scalp, let it sit for 5 minutes, and shampoo out with a mild shampoo. No strictly controlled scientific studies have been performed on this, but it can't hurt to eat more protein in your diet, unless you are allergic or on a medically restricted diet.

    Split Ends

    • Split ends are a common problem in hair. Split ends will not allow hair to grow. Therefore, according to Women's Fitness, trim them off. After trimming, Women's Fitness recommends mixing 1 teaspoon honey with 2 tablespoons olive oil and egg yolk. Apply to the hair for 30 minutes, and wash out with a gentle shampoo.

    Clean Pores

    • Pores and hair follicles must be clean to allow for growth. The logic is that if the follicles are clogged by oil and dirt, hair growth will not occur. Therefore, wash your scalp with a gentle brush, like a shaving brush, to cleanse the follicles.

    Stress and Hair Loss

    • Medical Science states that stress causes hair loss. One type of stress-induced hair loss, telogen effluvium, pushes hair into a resting phase and it falls out. Another type, alopecia areata, causes white blood cells to attack hair and it falls out. Since stress causes hair loss, the opposite is true as well. Try to lead a stress-free life or remove the stressors in your life so that hair loss does not occur.
