How to Smudge With Sage to Cleanse Your House

Native American Indians believed that certain herbs could help purify and cleanse a space. This was especially important before ritualistic healings or if negative energy could be felt within a space. Today, practicing Pagans, Native Americans, and others still use sage to smudge and purify areas. In combination with visualization, sage can clear and purify your home or other areas that may contain negative energy.

  Light the sage bundle and let the flame spread until the entire end of the sage is smoldering. If needed, blow out the flames so that the sage is smoking, not actually on fire.

  Start at one point in your home or the area that needs to be cleansed. Allow the sage smoke to fill the beginning area. Some individuals pray or chant while smudging, so if this is comfortable, feel free to do so. Move throughout the area, allowing the sage smoke to reach all spaces in the home. This includes closets, all rooms, corners, and between furniture.

  Continue moving throughout the space until you reach the area where you started. You can stay longer in areas that feel negative or uncomfortable, allowing more smoke to linger in those particular areas.

  Allow the sage to burn out in a clay dish. Repeat the process until the negative energy is gone.
