Uses for Licorice Tincture

A tincture is the solution created when an herb, extract or plant is dissolved in an alcohol base, which allows for the solution to be applied topically as needed. Tinctures can also be concocted by using glycerin or vinegar in place of the alcohol if sensitivity issues are present. Licorice and licorice root has been used for centuries for the healing properties associated with the plant. Using a licorice tincture allows you to receive the benefits of licorice, without having to ingest the extract.
  1. Face

    • Licorice root, when dissolved in a glycerin based tincture, can help promote the healing of canker sores. Applying the licorice tincture directly to the canker sore helps clear up the sore over a short period of time. Eczema, a skin conditions that results in itchy, flaky and red skin, can also benefit by using a licorice tincture. Use a tincture made from glycerin, as a licorice tincture with an alcohol base further dries the skin.

    Scalp and Hair

    • For those suffering from an excessively oily scalp, which results in greasy-looking hair, using a licorice tincture can stave off oil production. An alcohol-based licorice tincture works well for this use, as the alcohol and licorice are both adept at halting oil production. To use the tincture straight, apply to the scalp with a cotton ball soaked in the tincture. You can also use licorice tincture to wash your hair, when it is diluted in shampoo. Add a few drops to shampoo and conditioner, to further prevent oily hair and scalp.

    Dysphagia

    • The inability to swallow properly, due a tightening of the esophageal muscles or due to strictures in the throat, is called dysphagia. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, licorice tincture can be useful diminishing the symptoms associated with dysphagia. Care must be exercised when ingesting licorice, licorice root or licorice tincture; licorice can cause an increase in blood pressure or interact with other medications.

    Pets

    • Licorice tincture can be useful in the holistic treatment of pets. For cats, a small amount of licorice tincture can be given to quell symptoms of conditions such as stomach upset, ulcers, arthritis, allergies and even upper respiratory problems. Dogs can reap the same benefits as cats, though a slightly larger dose may be required depending on the size of the dog. You must consult your pet's veterinarian prior to giving licorice root to make sure the extract does not interact with any pre-existing medical conditions or medications.
