Extenze Warnings
Extenze is an herbal supplement that is purported to increase sexual performance and pleasure. Its makers claim that it is all-natural and completely safe. However, some of the ingredients found in Extenze have unpleasant side effects, some of which are potentially life-threatening. Checking with your doctor before starting supplementation with herbal medicine like Extenze is the best way to prevent serious problems.-
Cardiovascular Problems
-
Extenze contains yohimbe and DHEA, which can have negative effects on the cardiovascular system. Yohimbe can cause an increase in your blood pressure, sometimes to dangerous levels, according to a review published in the June 2005 issue of "Obesity Reviews." DHEA has the potential to cause heart arrhythmia, and abnormal heartbeats. Arrhythmias can be fatal, especially if you already have a pre-existing heart condition.
Bleeding Problems
-
Extenze has the potential to cause bleeding problems, due to the ginger it contains. Ginger is a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor. The inhibition of thromboxane synthetase can lead to prolonged bleeding time, especially if you are also taking aspirin or warfarin. Severe bleeding can lead to shock, and must be immediately treated to prevent permanent damage or death.
Mental Status Changes
-
The ginseng and yohimbe in Extenze can cause serious changes in mental status. Ginseng can induce episodes of mania, especially if you have a history of psychiatric illness or are taking antidepressants, according to a case report published in the January 2002 issue of " Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica." Yohimbe can cause feelings of anxiety, agitation and paranoia. The higher the dose, the more likely you are to experience these kinds of side effects.
Other Problems
-
Many of the herbs found in Extenze -- like ginger and stinging nettle -- can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, such as abdominal discomfort, nausea and diarrhea. Licorice root can cause problems with your muscles, including pain, generalized weakness and numbness. Some of the herbs in Extenze and can also have serious drug interactions.
