The Effects of Kratom Powder

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a large tree -- growing to about 50 feet -- indigenous to South East Asia. Kratom powder is obtained from the crushed leaves of the tree and contains an alkaloid called Mitragynine, which influences the parts of the brain that control mood and anxiety. In fact, kratom has become a trendy herbal remedy because of its effects on people. Kratom powder can be hidden in juices and foods.
  1. Effects

    • Kratom is unusual in that it has both stimulating and sedative effects. Taken in small doses, it increases alertness and energy and induces a feeling of happiness. The herb tends to make the user more talkative and gregarious and even improves physical strength. In larger doses, it acts as more of a sedative and analgesic. It is calming and can even cause the user to enter a dreamlike state. Sometimes it causes involuntary eye movement.

    Benefits

    • Kratom is often used to aid opiate withdrawal and as an opiate substitute. It is a cure for diarrhea and in its native Malaysia, was consumed by workers to help them endure long hours of rigorous physical work while making them feel happier. Kratom has also been associated with the relief of chronic pain, weight loss and even improved sexual performance.

    Disadvantages

    • In excess, Kratom can cause headaches, feelings of nausea and even vomiting. It's important not to drive or use heavy machinery or power tools when under the influence of Kratom, and it's potentially dangerous to mix Kratom with other drugs or stimulants. Pregnant woman mustn't take Kratom in any form.

    Warning

    • Kratom is an ethnobotanical product and as such is marketed, not for human consumption, but as incense or for research purposes. Kratom is illegal in Thailand, Burma, Vietnam and Australia and in Europe in Finland, Denmark and Poland. So far it has not been banned by the Food and Drug Administration, but it is on a list of drugs that the agency intends to investigate. Some imports of Kratom have been refused because it is considered an unapproved new drug.
