Herbs for Mental Sharpness

Despite a history of debate about the effectiveness of herbal treatments, humans have used herbs for a variety of medical treatments for thousands of years. Among the desired effects of herbal treatments is increased mental sharpness; proponents point to an assortment of herbs that will reportedly improve thought processes.
  1. Gingko Biloba

    • Perhaps the best known of herbs used to improve mental sharpness, ginkgo biloba first gained popularity in China many centuries ago. Proponents of this herb claim that it makes people more alert and aware of their surroundings, improves focus and can even prove effective in treating Alzheimer's disease.

    Rosemary

    • Rosemary is used medicinally in a variety of ways, including treatment of indigestion and migraines. Another common use, dating back to ancient Greece, is the treatment of memory lapses. According to some practitioners, the aroma of rosemary on its own can improve mental functions.

    Gotu Kola

    • Gotu kola is popular in India, where its users include yogis, who often claim it improves their concentration and awareness. Some users go so far as to claim it increases IQ, although such statements have not been scientifically proven.

    Hawthorn

    • Hawthorn is high in antioxidants, which can help rid the body --- including the brain --- of toxins. Herbal enthusiasts say hawthorn also improves the supply of oxygen to the brain, improving the thought process.

    Other Herbs

    • Several other herbs may improve mental sharpness as well, including brahmi and hydrocotyle, which both originate in Asia; and shankapushpi, from India. Claims for these herbs include revitalization of the mind, enhanced learning skills and improved memory and recall.

    Cautions

    • Herbs can sometimes cause side effects --- most commonly, upset stomachs or headaches. Those considering taking an herb to improve mental sharpness should consult their physician first.
