Papaya Leaf Uses

Papaya leaf from the papaya or paw paw tree, otherwise known as carica papaya or custard apple leaf, is deep green and medium in size and contains cancer-fighting and other medicinal properties. The papaya leaf has been used for centuries to remedy ailments such as nausea and irritable digestion and is most recently noted for its effect on certain cancerous tumors. The blade, stem, vein and midrib of the papaya leaf each contain healthful and remedial benefits.
  1. Health Regulation

    • Papaya leaf contains healthful properties such as flavonols, which are a class of flavonoids with antioxidant activities, calcium, healthy fats, papain and vitamin C. To regulate health, papaya leaf can be consumed regularly as a steamed or raw vegetable, juice, extract or infusion. Consuming large qualities of any form of papaya leaf can result in a laxative effect.

    Cancer Treatment

    • Recent lab research at the University of Florida has revealed anticancer properties, specifically in cases of breast, pancreas, cervical and liver cancer, in papaya leaf extract and extract teas. Extracts and extract teas slowed tumor growth more significantly with larger quantities. Although this research is recent, throughout the last four decades, cancer patients across the globe claim to have cured themselves by consuming papaya leaves and leaf juice.

    Immune System

    • Researchers from the University of Florida found that extracts from the papaya leaf increase the production of an immune system-regulating molecule when consumed in large amounts. This medicinal quality could eventually be used in treating immune systems under attack from cancer and cancer treatments and other serious conditions.

    Common Ailments

    • Common ailments such as heartburn, nausea, kidney stones, ulcers and even a runny nose can also be remedied by consuming papaya leaf and papaya leaf extract. The latex, or sap, found in the leaf stem can also be used as an antibacterial solution in treating infected wounds or certain rashes.

    Digestive Protection

    • Papain, a protein-dissolving enzyme found in papaya leaf, breaks down carbohydrates and wheat gluten which can aid in regulating digestion. Digestive problems such as irritable bowels can also be treated using papain. For centuries, this property has also been used to treat intestinal worms.
