Herbs for Reducing Water Weight

Water retention, which may feel like weight gain, is a symptom of a wide range of conditions. A diuretic removes the excess fluid from the body by making the kidneys excrete more sodium. This action in turn draws water from the bloodstream to balance out the concentration of sodium, resulting in more frequent urination and the removal of excess water. Herbal diuretics offer an alternative to prescription diuretics, however, caution is advised as unmonitored use can cause dehydration and imbalances in sodium and potassium levels.
  1. Dandelion

Drinking up to four cups of dandelion tea daily cleanses the spleen, kidneys, liver and blood. Taking dandelion tea has a number of advantages in addition to removing excess water. It is rich in vitamins A, B, C and D, reduces cholesterol, stimulates the circulation and helps the absorption of calcium.

    Stinging Nettle

    • Nettle roots are known for their detoxifying and diuretic properties. You can make nettle tea or add leaves to a salad, as all parts of the plant have a cleansing effect. Nettle juice is an effective diuretic for people with heart and circulation problems, and it is thought that this is due to the high levels of potassium and flavonoids in the plant.
