How to Use Holy Basil for Pets

Holy basil is an herb that is often used in alternative medicine. The extracted oils of holy basil are used topically to treat skin disorders in humans and pets. One common use of holy basil is as a treatment for ringworm. Holy basil is not cooking basil; it can be purchased in health food stores and vitamin supplement stores.

      Clean your animal's bedding to prevent the ringworm from spreading.

      Clean the cat or dogs' environment (bedding or frequented area). Ringworm is a common fungal infection that can be passed for animal to human. Ensuring a clean environment can stop the spreading of ringworm.

      Clip the fur surrounding the lesions before applying the holy basil.

      Clip the fur around the lesions formed by the ringworm. When clipping the area, do not agitate the skin or the animal. Irritating the infected skin can spread the infection.

      Apply two to five drops of holy basil oil topically to the affected area three times daily. Holy basil will speed healing; the infection will fade until gone within a few weeks.
