Home Remedies for Wild Onions

Wild onions can heal a number of common ailments in children, adults and seniors. Ailments include coughing and excessive phlegm, urinary tract infections, stings, bites, muscle strains, sprains and earaches. Onions are made into different concoctions to heal different ailments; concoction like syrups, extracts and poultices. If you find yourself in a pinch and don't have any medicine on hand, one of these remedies may work.
  1. Cough Syrup

    • Sugar can be used to draw juice out of a wild onion and create a syrup that can be ingested. Onions have been known to make good cough suppressants and expectorants for children or adults who have a dry, hacking cough or a cough including phlegm. The syrup must be given in moderate amounts, or stomach discomfort or even digestion problems can occur. A poultice of onion can also be made to be placed on the chest of a person who is having difficulty breathing.

    Urinary Tract Infections

    • Urinary tract infections can be painful and annoying, especially when they recur often. An extract, or tincture, can be made from the onions. The extract can be combined with bee balm and juniper berry or yerba mansa to ease the symptoms and effects of a urinary tract infection. Taking the extract over time will help ease and eliminate the infection.

    Insect Stings

    • The best way to prepare a poultice for stings and bites from insects is by mashing raw onion into a juicy pulp. You can either apply this poultice directly to the wound or wrap the pulp in muslin and apply it to the wound. This treatment also works for bruises, muscle strains and sprained ankles. However, it's best not to put the poultice on a black eye since the juice may get into the eye and cause irritation.

    Earaches

    • Wild onions can also be a cure for earaches, a common childhood ailment. This is an old remedy that has been used to reduce infection and pain in an ear. To treat the infected ear, simply crush some juice out of the onion and put the juice in an eyedropper. Drop a drop of the juice into the ear and allow it to settle. However, do not put anything into the ear canal if it is possible that the ear drum is ruptured.
