Uses of Oregano as an Ointment

Oregano is a must-have in any kitchen cupboard and known for its slightly bitter, yet bold flavor in Italian cuisine. The herb is also known for its curative properties. In his book "The Cure is in the Cupboard," osteopathic physician Cass Ingram describes how oil of oregano has numerous medicinal uses. The oil, made from the flowering tops of the oregano plant, is used to make oregano ointment. This ointment is widely available and can be found in most health-food stores. It is used therapeutically to treat a wide variety of problems, particularly because of its antifungal and antiviral properties.
  1. Antifungal

    • Oregano ointment can be used to treat fungal infections, such as athlete's foot or toenail fungus. To use the ointment for this purpose, first make sure that the affected area is clean and dry. Then massage some ointment onto the area. This can be done up to three times each day. According to Ingram, the oregano oil in the ointment inhibits the growth of fungi.

    Boils

    • In her book, "Natural Healing Wisdom & Know-How," author Amy Roste explains that oregano ointment can be successfully used to treat boils. Oregano ointment should be applied to the boil, along with the contents of one capsule of golden seal, and gently massaged into the boil itself and the surrounding skin. It should then be protected with a bandage. This can be done once or twice each day until the boil bursts on its own.

    Ringworm

    • Ointment made from oregano can be used as a remedy for treating ringworm. The ointment should be applied directly to the affected and surrounding areas two times each day. The same treatment can also be used to combat other skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema.

    Dandruff

    • Restoring the scalp to its normal condition, oregano ointment eliminates dandruff flakes. To use oregano ointment for dandruff control, rub it into your dry scalp. Leave it on for about 15 minutes, then shampoo your hair as usual. Do this twice a week for a few weeks and you should see results.

    Warnings

    • Oil of oregano, which is the active ingredient in oregano ointment, should only be used externally, except when under a qualified doctor's supervision. Nursing and pregnant women should not use oil of oregano or oregano ointment at all, nor should children under 2 years old.
