Barberry Remedies

If you suffer from a disorder or illness, a barberry remedy may be the cure for you. You can brew tea, make creams and tinctures or swallow barberry extracts for skin disorders, infections and digestive problems. Some users experiment with barberry in conjunction with conventional medications; consult with a medical professional before combining a barberry remedy with any other medications.
  1. Infusion

    • Clear up eye infections or eye irritations with a barberry infusion. Make a barberry essence by infusing either the roots and bark of the barberry plant or the plants, leaves and flowers in boiling water. Cover the infusion and allow it to steep and then cool. Place the essence in a sterilized eye cup and wash your eye with the solution. You can also use the infusion to clear up eye infections and ear mites in animals by inserting drops into the animal's affected eyes or ears.

    Salve

    • Rub barberry ointment on your skin to relieve psoriasis or help heal skin infections. Add barberry essential oil to a prepared salve or cream or include finely chopped barberry roots or root powder to the salve or ointment to prepare your own barberry ointment or salve. Barberry salve can also prove effective when treating candida (yeast) infections.

    Tea

    • Fight gastrointestinal, urinary and respiratory tract infections with barberry tea. Steep 1 to 2 tsps. of dried root or 1 to 2 tsps. of whole or crushed barberry berries in 2/3 cup of hot water. Cover the cup and allow the tea to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink the tea three times daily but not for more than seven consecutive days at a time. Barberry tea may also help to alleviate heartburn, diarrhea and hypertension.

    Tincture

    • Use prepared barberry tinctures to clear up acne or fungal infections or to bolster your immune system. Insert 20 drops of barberry tincture in 1/4 cup of water and drink this mixture three times daily for two weeks. You may also use the barberry tincture in conjunction with other herbs including goldenseal, coptis or Oregon grape root.
