How to Use Neem Oil for Internal Use

Internal ingestion of neem oil has been used in ancient medicine for treatment of malaria, intestinal worms, diabetes, ulcers, fungi, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Very little research has been conducted on the efficacy or safety of neem oil, however, so consult your doctor before taking any. It can be harmful.

      Use caution. Clinical trials are lacking for internal uses of neem oil, but risks have been identified. Long-term use may harm the liver. Overdosing with neem oil may damage the kidneys. Do not take neem oil internally if you are pregnant, as it may cause a miscarriage. Do not take neem oil if lactating, as there are no studies about potential harm transferred to a breastfeeding infant.

      Consider other options. Other oils and herbs, such as tea tree oil and oregano oil, have healing properties without the potential adverse reactions to neem oil. Depending on the ailment that you're seeking treatment for, consider other options.

      Never give neem oil to infants or children. It has caused injury and death in infants and children. A common reaction in children is encephalopathy, which can present with nausea, vomiting, seizures and breathing problems. Do not provide neem oil to children under the age of 18.

      Dose correctly. Consult your doctor about the dosage for you, and do not take neem oil for more than one month. Neem oil may be purchased in tincture form.
