How to Use Grapefruit Seed Extract for Lice

Grapefruit seed extract is an oil extract made from ground up grapefruit seeds. It is then mixed with a carrier substance such as glycerine and distilled water. Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent home remedy for numerous, external skin problems such as eczema and fungal infections. It is also great for deterring insect pests in the garden and home -- as well as being an effective remedy for parasitic insects such as head and body lice.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy the grapefruit seed extract if you don't already have some at home. Look in the vitamin and supplement section at your local health food store. It will be in liquid form, usually in a dropper bottle.

    • 2

Make a grapefruit seed extract solution. To do this, mix about 1-1/2 cups water with 30 drops of the extract. You can use any container for this, including a bottle. Mix it or shake it well. If you have very long, thick hair, you can double the recipe.

    • 3

Mix 1/4 of the grapefruit seed extract solution with 2/4 of shampoo. Mix this in a separate bottle or jar.

    • 4

Massage this solution into your hair and scalp. Do it thoroughly so it covers your whole head and hair.

    • 5

Cover your hair and scalp with a plastic bag or shower cap. You can wrap a towel around your head too -- leave this for 30 minutes.

    • 6

Rinse your hair thoroughly. You do not need to shampoo it again.

    • 7

Comb your hair while it is wet. Use a regular comb or preferably a special, de-lousing comb. You can buy these at a drug store.

    • 8

Repeat the procedure every day until all the lice are gone.
