Effect of Radiation in Allium Cepa
Allium cepa is the scientific name for red onion bulbs. The respiration rates of these bulbs can be affected by radiation. These rates affect the quality of the bulbs during storage.-
Red Onion
-
Red onions (allium cepa) not only provide you with a delicious dish for your table but have been shown to have antifungal and antibacterial properties. During storage, before going to market, the quality of the bulbs may decrease causing rotting and sprouting.
Gamma Radiation
-
If you radiate allium cepa bulbs with gamma radiation, their respiration rate increases. This increased respiration rate hinders spoilage and delays sprouting. This produces a better product at market.
Side Effects
-
The small amount of gamma radiation used to increase respiration rates has not been shown to have side effects or to be dangerous (as of January 2011). Many people in agricultural research do however feel more investigation is necessary before widely using this technique.
