Adverse Effects of Noni Juice
Cultivated throughout Polynesia, people utilize all parts of the noni plant in traditional medicine to treat sores and lesions of the mouth, fevers and urinary problems. While some companies claim that the consummation of noni juice will boost your immune system, there is no proof of this according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. However, adverse effects of ingesting this juice have been reported.-
High Blood Sugar
-
Some noni juice products contain high amounts of sugar. Ingesting high levels of sugar can cause a diabetic person's blood sugar levels to soar which can lead to hyperglycemia. Symptoms of hyperglycemia include: tremendous thirst, frequent urination, dry skin, hunger, blurry vision, sleepiness, and slow healing wounds. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center recommends avoiding noni juice or drinking it with caution if you're diabetic.
Hyperkalemia
-
Drinking noni juice may cause hyperkalemia if you suffer from renal problems. Your body stores most of its potassium in its cells and organ. Very little potassium flows through your bloodstream. However, when your kidneys do not function properly and cannot filter the potassium from your blood, this mineral will build up in your bloodstream. Ingesting foods high in potassium such as noni juice can cause or worsen hyperkalemia. Symptoms include: irregular heartbeat, fatigue, weakness, numbness, paralysis, trouble breathing, nausea and vomiting. Some people do not exhibit any symptoms. This condition can threaten your life and needs to be treated right away.
Liver Damage
-
The Colorado State University has documented a possible link between the ingestion of noni juice and liver damage resulting from herbal hepatotoxicity---chemical induced liver damage---in people who previously suffered from toxic hepatitis and people who had no history of liver problems. According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering the anthraquinone contents of noni juice may contribute to the liver damage linked to the juice.
Other Adverse Effects
-
If you drink noni juice you may suffer from constipation. You also may suffer from adverse effect if you take ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enzyme) to lower blood pressure or angiotensin receptor blockers to reduce your blood pressure or prevent diabetes-induced liver failure. Noni juice also produces antioxidant effects that may negatively interfere with chemo or radiation therapy.
