Rhodiola Contraindications
Rhodiola is an herb commonly sold in capsule form, and sometimes under the alternate names of golden root, rose root, arctic root and its scientific name, Rhodiola rosea. It is used for several conditions, including mild to moderate depression, mental fatigue, energy level and stress. Clinical studies on the herb are limited and therefore so are reports of adverse reactions. However, some contraindications do exist.-
Pregnancy
-
Although there are no clinical studies that demonstrate Rhodiola is unsafe for pregnant and nursing women, there are also no studies that show it to be safe. For this reason the use of Rhodiola during pregnancy or while a woman is nursing is contraindicated.
Insomnia
-
Perhaps due to its energy-enhancing effects, the herb has been shown to increase insomnia. For this reason, do not take it near bedtime. However, it should be noted that some individuals use Rhodiola to help improve pre-existing insomnia and have reported positive results.
Irratibility
-
Due to its reputation as a potential mood enhancer, it may be surprising that a possible side effect of rhodiola is irritability. However, it is only reported to have occurred when high doses are taken repeatedly over several days. It is therefore recommended that you consult a physician before taking rhodiola and do not exceed recommended dosing requirements.
