Grapefruit seed extract has been shown in tests to kill salmonella bacteria on chicken skins, as well as other bacteria, according to David Schlundt, Ph.D., of the Vanderbilt University Psychology Department. According to Schlundt, grapefruit seed extract may be effective against more than 800 bacterial and viral strains. This is thought to be because the extract alkalizes the blood, killing bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. According to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the extract works by breaking the bacterial membrane.
