Health Uses for Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is a natural remedy thought to have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. The extract can be used internally or externally for conditions such as acne, gastrointestinal disorders and food poisoning. It is made from grapefruit pulp and seeds and is available in liquid form.
  1. Anti-bacterial, Anti-viral, Anti-Fungal and Anti-parasitic Uses

    • Grapefruit seed extract has been shown in tests to kill salmonella bacteria on chicken skins, as well as other bacteria, according to David Schlundt, Ph.D., of the Vanderbilt University Psychology Department. According to Schlundt, grapefruit seed extract may be effective against more than 800 bacterial and viral strains. This is thought to be because the extract alkalizes the blood, killing bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. According to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the extract works by breaking the bacterial membrane.

    Pancreas Disorder

    • A study in the Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology showed that grapefruit seed extract decreased the extent of pancreatitis by acting as an antioxidant.

    Pets

    • The ASPCA reports that grapefruit seed extract also is safe to use in pets for similar ailments as in humans.
