Grey Tea Health Benefits

Grey tea, or Earl Grey tea, is a popular beverage in the United Kingdom, and is gaining in popularity in many countries. Traditionally, it is made from black tea leaves infused with the oil from the peel or rind of the bergamot citrus fruit. The bergamot oil is what gives this tea its unique smooth, spiced flavor, as well as many of its health benefits.
  1. Antioxidant

    • Teas have long been consumed for their health benefits, and Earl Grey, along with most black teas, contains compounds called polyphenols which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants are powerful substances that help to reduce cancer-causing free-radicals and oxidative damage in the body. Drinking Earl Grey tea can help prevent disease and illness, as well as reduce signs of aging.

    Anti-Depressant

    • Bergamot has been used as a natural remedy to treat depression. Aromatherapy massage often includes bergamot oil to help relieve built-up tensions or fatigue. Consuming Earl Grey tea can help to relieve mild symptoms of depression; however, it is best to speak with a physician if you believe you suffer from depression.

    Relaxant

    • Few things are as simple and relaxing as a cup of tea. The warmth of the tea and the aroma of the bergamot oil are soothing and can help to fight anxiety. Also, many types of Earl Grey tea are infused with other flavors, such as lavender and vanilla, which can help to promote relaxation.

    Disinfectant

    • Bergamot oil is touted as being a natural disinfectant, and may be helpful in fighting mild infections when consumed. According to the Tea Palace, bergamot is also known to fight halitosis and improve oral health.
