How Do I Make Herbal Lice Deterrent?

The word "lice" strikes fear in any parent, and simply the thought of lice can make a person squirm. Although highly contagious and quite common, lice don't spread disease and aren't dangerous. Regardless, avoiding a lice infestation is highly desirable. After ridding the house of lice, it's possible to make an herbal remedy that will deter further infestations.

Instructions

  1. Getting Rid of the Lice

    • 1
Many health food stores offer coconut oil soap.

Lather your hair with coconut oil soap. Add a few drops of tea tree oil, and rinse thoroughly.

    • 2
Choose an old towel, just in case.

Repeat, but do not rinse. Wrap your hair in a towel, and wait 30 minutes.

    • 3
A regular comb won't do the trick. Buy a nit comb.

Comb through your hair with a nit comb. Make sure to thoroughly comb each section, starting with the scalp. Discard any nits or lice in bowl of alcohol.

    • 4
After the third hair washing, it's time to dry your hair.

Wash your hair a third time with coconut oil soap and tea tree oil. Rinse and dry.

    • 5

Check again for nits. Repeat the process as necessary until all nits are gone.

Deterring Further Infestations with Herbal Spray

    • 6
A clean, used spray bottle works as well as a new one.

Clean out a used spray bottle, or rinse out a new one.

    • 7
Lavender works as a disinfectant for the scalp and skin.

Open the spray bottle, and add five to 10 drops each of citronella oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. Top off the bottle with water.

    • 8
You can use this formula instead of hair gel.

Spray formula on hair instead of hair gel to deter further lice infestations.

Deterring Further Infestations with Herbal Shampoo

Add herbal oil to your shampoo to deter lice.

Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to 1 oz. of shampoo.

    • 10

Shake shampoo bottle to mix thoroughly.

    • 11
Use the shampoo like you would any other type of shampoo.
