How do I Make Canna Oil?
With state governments legalizing the medicinal use of marijuana from coast to coast, cultivation of the plant and production of products using its extracts is legalized with it, though limitations and heavy regulation exist; check your state's laws before growing or acquiring any marijuana. If you have a medical marijuana prescription and wish to seek an alternative to smoking the plant or taking a synthetic pill, "canna oil," an oil made of marijuana plant derivatives, is a culinary alternative.Things You'll Need
- 1 oz. cannabis buds
- Knife, scissors, mortar and pestle, or grinder
- Stove
- 1 cup cooking oil
- Skillet or saucepan
- Kitchen thermometer
- Spatula
- Coffee filter
- Plastic storage container with tight-fitting lid
- 2 knives (optional)
- Oven mitts (optional)
- Drinking straw (optional)

1
Break apart the marijuana buds using your cutting utensil or grinding equipment. The smaller you make the pieces, the greater the amount of surface area you have. This allows for a faster and more-even rate of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)--the plant's main psychoactive chemical--leaving the plant and entering the oil.
-
2
Heat 1 cup cooking oil to 280 degrees F in a skillet or saucepan on the stove. Check the temperature of the oil regularly using your kitchen thermometer.
-
3
Drop your cannabis into the oil carefully, to avoid splashing, 1/8 oz. at a time. Continuously stir with your spatula as you add the cannabis.
-
4
Stir the oil continuously for at least two hours; though, occasional 20 to 30 second breaks do not ruin the potency of the finished product. Do not let the oil exceed 280 degrees F, as higher temperatures have a negative affect on THC.
-
5
Remove the oil from the stove and pour it through a coffee filter into your plastic storage container. Cooked oil is significantly darker than its original state. Discard the marijuana buds, as they now have a low THC content.
