How to Extract Kava

Kava is an ancient plant that has been used as an extract and herbal supplement to increase focus and concentration. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, kava aids in relieving anxiety and depression and induces a restful sleep. A study by John Prescott of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Center, University of New South Wales, Kensington, Australia, has also shown it reduces alcohol consumption. The part of the kava plant that is used for medicinal purposes is the root. In traditional cultures, kava root was chewed or smashed and then mixed with water and served to drink. Instructions

    • 1

Take a piece of clean kava root and cut it in smaller pieces.

    • 2

Take a mason jar and fill the jar up with the kava root. It is best to use a sterilized jar to avoid getting any dirt or germs into the extraction.

    • 3

Add vinegar to the jar making sure all of the kava is covered with vinegar. A basic rule is 1 part herb to 5 parts vinegar for dried herbs and 1 part herb to 3 parts vinegar for fresh herbs.

    • 4

Cover the jar tightly and place it in a cool dark place for 4-6 weeks. This will make sure that the kava is completely extracted into the vinegar.

    • 5

Strain the kava root after 4-6 weeks. Take a cheesecloth and pour the extracted liquid through it into another glass jar or pot. Make sure to squeeze the cheesecloth after all the liquid has been strained to get every last drop.
