How to Color Hair With Alopecia Areata

Alopecia is a condition that causes hair to thin and can be aggravated by the chemicals found in hair dyes. If you suffer from alopecia areata--where you may lose hair in small, round patches--you should use natural herb dyes instead of chemical ones. Herbal dyes do not damage hair and can be used more frequently than chemical dyes. Some natural herbal dyes like those made from henna powder can even make your hair feel thicker because they coat the cuticle layer of the hair as well as the strand.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part powdered chamomile and two parts powdered henna in a nonmetal bowl. Both of these herbs can be found in any health food store or online at websites like iHerb, Apex Henna or King Tut Shop.

    • 2

Add hot water to the herb mixture until a thick paste forms. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to the mixture. Vinegar helps the color adhere to the hair. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

    • 3

Wash your hair and put on latex gloves, as henna can stain the palms of your hands. Apply the dye to your wet hair while massaging your scalp. Comb the dye through your hair to distribute the dye evenly. Pile up your hair and place a plastic bag over it. Wrap a towel around your head to keep your hair warm and wait for approximately an hour.

Remove the towel and bag and rinse your hair. Allow it to air dry. Admire your newly created brown tresses.
