Antiandrogen Herb for Acne
Antiandrogen medications keep androgens like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the androgen receptors from bonding. Overactive hormones cause the sebaceous gland to overproduce sebum, which in turn causes acne. As a result, using herbs which have similar anti-androgen properties may have an effect on acne.-
Background
-
Although it has not been confirmed in studies as a certified treatment for acne, people who have tried treating their acne with anti-androgen herbs have seen mixed results. Common herbs with anti-androgenic properties include vitex and saw palmetto.
Herbs
-
Saw palmetto is a highly effective anti-androgen herb. By keeping testosterone from converting to DHT, it limits any affect that DHT has on acne. Vitex, also known as chaste tree, can act as a mild anti-androgen.
Treatment
-
All of these herbs are available in tablet, capsule or tea form. Wait at least 12 weeks before expecting results using anti-androgen treatment.
Side Effects
-
Babies need DHT to form correctly in the womb. Therefore, women who are trying to get pregnant should not take anti-androgen herbs as they may cause birth defects by eliminating DHT.
