Supplements for Energy & Aging

A multitude of supplements are available to help the body as it ages, including ones formulated for specific concerns such as menopause, bone and teeth health, eye health, the immune system and for prevention of diseases such as Alzheimer's. Supplements to boost energy throughout the work day or before a workout also are available, as are supplements that boost energy while simultaneously combating the aging process.
  1. Supplements For Aging

    • Numerous supplements are available for aging healthfully. Some include vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium with vitamin D and black cohosh. According to the Delicious Living website article "5 Essential Supplements For Aging Well," 400 IU of vitamin E daily can help boost the immune system, prevent cataracts and contribute to the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's. 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C helps boost the immune system, help the body absorb iron, contribute to gum and teeth health and promote healing of wounds. Calcium supplements with vitamin D keep the bones and teeth strong and help prevent fractures and osteoporosis. 600 to 1,200 mg of calcium a day should be taken depending on diet. Black cohosh is usually prescribed as Remifemin with 40 mg daily. It reduces menopause-related hot flashes, night sweats and mild mood changes.

    Supplements For Energy

    • Fatigue, lack of restorative sleep, poor diet, stress, depression and "lack of carbohydrate fuel" can all affect energy during the day, according to the All Star Health website's information on energy supplements. To boost energy prior to exercise try thermogenic stimulants, which are dietary supplements that increase the body's metabolism, resulting in the body burning more calories and boosting the body's energy level. Synephrine, or bitter orange, has an effect on the body similar to the effect of the ephedra, a banned substance, without the negative effects on the heart rate or blood pressure. Syhephrine supplements increase metabolism and calories burned, therefore increasing energy. Sports drinks, energy gels, energy bars and shakes, and St. John's Wort are among the many other forms of energy supplements.

    Supplements For Energy and Aging

    • Ginkgo biloba, Acetyl L Carnitine and coenzyme q10 are three anti-aging supplements that also boost energy levels, according to the Simply Anti Aging website article "Boosting Energy Over 40." Ginkgo biloba is an ancient Chinese herbal remedy that helps blood flow to the brain, contributing to mental performance and energy level. Acetyl L Carnitine and coenzyme q10 are both naturally occurring substances already produced by the body. The body makes less of both as it ages; however, supplements can help restore these substances to the body, aiding mental function and energy level. As the body ages, getting enough of these substances from food can be problematic, so adding supplements helps prevent a decline in mental function and energy level. All three of these supplements are good for the heart.
