Samento Cat's Claw Contraindications
-
Pregnancy
-
Cat’s claw has a long history of use for preventing and ending pregnancies. NCCAM advises women already pregnant or trying to conceive to avoid cat’s claw. The University of Maryland Medical Center instructs nursing mothers to refrain from using this herb as well.
Immune System
-
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies show that this herb might stimulate the immune system. For this reason, people who take medications to suppress the immune system, such as those with autoimmune disorders (where the immune system attacks healthy tissue) or who have undergone transplants or skin grafts should stay away from samento.
Surgery
-
NCCAM indicates cat’s claw might interfere with controlling blood pressure during and after surgical procedures. Anyone taking the herb and going in for surgery soon should consult with his or her doctor. Typically, patients will have to discontinue certain supplements and medications before a procedure to avoid complications.
Medications
-
Cat’s claw can interact with a variety of medications, including blood-thinners, diuretics, contraceptives and other medications containing female hormones and blood pressure medicine. Anyone taking these medicines should ask their doctor if taking cat’s claw at the same time would cause any problems.
