Rhodiola Rosea Root Extract Side Effects

Rhodiola rosea, sometimes called golden root, is an herb known for its adaptogen effects on the body. An adaptogen is a substance that aids your body in fighting the negative effects of stress through stimulating the adrenal system. Rhodiola rosea has been used for hundreds of years in Eastern Europe and Asia for enhancing physical and mental stamina, alleviating depression and improving sleep quality. However, as with any herb, you should be aware of potential side effects.
  1. Agitation and Insomnia

    • Taking too much rhodiola rosea can cause insomnia.

While rhodiola rosea has been touted for its ability to help you get a good night's sleep, taking too much of the herb, or taking it at the wrong time, can have the opposite effect. Typically, the recommended daily doss of this herb is between 100 and 600 mg. Taking more than this amount could have an adverse reaction on your ability to sleep properly. Rhodiola rosea affects the body in a manner similar to caffeinated drinks, which should be avoided during use of the herb. Avoid taking rhodiola rosea in the evening or before bedtime, as it can cause the same energizing effect as drinking a cup of coffee.

    Heart Palpitations or Jitters

    • One side effect of too much rhodiola rosea is heart palpitations.

Check with your physician before taking rhodiola rosea if you have blood pressure problems or any sort of irregular rapid heart beat disorders. This herb can have stimulating effects on the body's internal system, causing an increase in symptoms you may be currently trying to control with traditional medication. You may also experience the "jitters" when taking this herb because of its tendency to increase blood sugar. To avert an over abundance of blood sugar, take rhodiola rosea on an empty stomach just before a meal.

    Blood Thinning

    • Rhodiola rosea can have a blood thinning effect.

If you are currently taking any type of prescription blood thinners or even large amounts of vitamin E, consult with your physician before taking rhodiola rosea. This herb can have a blood-thinning effect on your body. In the event of any upcoming surgery or invasive procedures, discontinue use of this herb and inform your physician of this or any other herb you are currently taking. By doing so, you can avoid any possible complications that could be caused by consumption of this herb.
