Barberry Root Uses & Dosage
The barberry is a shrub with grayish bark that produces yellow flowers in the spring and red berries in the fall. The berries are edible and can be made into jam, but the root and berries also have medicinal uses. The first attested use of barberry dates back to ancient Egypt, where barberry root and fennel were used to prevent the plague. Barberry root was used throughout history, and its importance as a medicinal herb continues into modern times. Although modern science hasn't committed to barberry's effectiveness over traditional treatments, the herb is considered safe in small doses.-
Liver Conditions
-
Native Americans used barberry to treat liver problems and found it to be effective against jaundice. Other healing traditions also recommend its use to control diabetes and hepatitis. Further study reveals that barberry increases secretion of bile, relieving stress on the liver. Make a tincture of barberry by steeping 5 to 9 g of barberry root in alcohol for three weeks, then add 10 to 30 drops to 1 cup of warm water. Take the tincture of barberry three times daily and do not use it for more than a week.
Cardiac Conditions
-
The alkaline berberbine, found in barberry root, dilates the blood vessels, reducing blood pressure. In China, barberry extracts are used to lower blood pressure following chemotherapy or radiation treatment. These effects also make barberry an effective herbal treatment for tachycardia, or rapid heart rate.
Antiseptic Properties
-
Berberine also acts as a strong antiseptic and is effective against several pathogenic bacteria, including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Barberry is used to treat urinary, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. Its antiseptic properties make barberry effective against sore throats. Crush the berries in water and gargle to treat throat infections. Taking barberry may also improve immune system function.
Digestive Uses
-
Barberry root is also effective against digestive problems and is said to be effective against intestinal blockages and diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea and food poisoning. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, evidence shows barberry to be more effective than antibiotics in relieving the symptoms of diarrhea, though antibiotics remain more effective in destroying the bacteria that caused the infection. To use barberry root for digestive upset, steep 1/2 to 1 tsp. of barberry root in 1 cup of hot water for about 10 to 15 minutes and take it three times daily.
