Marigold Flower Benefits

Marigolds are hardy, annual plants with numerous varieties. Marigold is also referred to as calendula and has been used for centuries as traditional remedy for a number of ailments. Marigold is rich in flavonoids, which are anti-oxidant-like chemicals that protect body cells from the process of oxidation. The flowers have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-spasmodic properties among many others.
  1. Anti-Inflammatory

    • Marigold can help speed healing and reduce inflammation. It is among the many herbs used to treat conjunctivitis and similar eye inflammations by rapidly reducing redness and swelling. Marigold also improves blood flow to the affected area. Marigold was also one of the earliest treatment options for stomach ulcers. The mouthwashes and gargles made with active ingredients found in marigold soothe sore throats and irritated mouth tissue. Marigold can help soothe irritation associated with diaper rashes, too.

    Anti-Fungal

    • The anti-fungal properties in marigold help treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm and candida. Marigold is used to treat a number of skin diseases including eczema, juvenile acne and skin ulcerations.

    Anti-Spasmodic

    • The anti-spasmodic properties of marigold can help relax muscle cramps and spasms. Marigold can relieve discomfort associated with menstrual cramps, indigestion, colitis and menopausal symptoms.

    Possible Anti-Cancer Properties

    • The most recent studies involving marigold seek to isolate its role as an anti-cancer agent. There has been some evidence that marigold can help treat certain cancers like Heren's carcinoma when used with other herbs such as Echinacea purpurea, Scorzonera humilis L., and Aconitum moldavicum. The evidence was the result of a study conducted by the Fedkovich Chernivtsi State University of Ukraine.
