The valerian plant is found in Europe, Asia and North America. There are more than 200 species of valerian, and the one that is typically used medicinally is V. officianlis, which is a variety found in Europe and Asia. In the United States, it is sold as a dietary supplement, not as a drug, which can lead to potency and quality variations between manufacturing lots. Valerian root may be found as an extract in powder or liquid form, and has several health benefits.-
Sleep Aid

Valerian root is most commonly known as a sleep aid. Valerian root is not addictive and can be used regularly. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, many of its chemical components have been identified, but the precise cause of its sleep-inducing effect is still unknown. The Office of Dietary Supplements states that evidence from chemical studies regarding the effectiveness of valerian root on sleeping disorders is inconclusive.
Anxiety Reduction

Valerian root is also used to help calm or eliminate anxiety. Like its ability to calm the brain down so that sleep can occur, it can also be used to maintain that ease of mind throughout the day. During the 1700s, valerian was used to treat headaches, nervousness and heart palpitations. In England during World War II, it was used to treat stress caused by air raids. While there are certainly many anecdotal indications that valerian root can ease stress, there is no scientific proof of its ability to do so.

Valerian root can prove helpful as a relief for stomach cramping and menstrual cramping. This supplement relaxes the muscles of the stomach, alleviating pain and discomfort. It is often recommended for people who have stomach issues related to stress and to those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Stress is meant to prepare the body for fight or flight, and when no relief is forthcoming, the constant muscular tension will cause pain. Valerian root eases the pain of cramping through a reduction in stress and anxiety.
