Herbalist Programs

When you're ready to turn your love of natural healing into a full-time career, consider an herbalist program that allows you to learn from home and gives you all the tools, resources and peer guidance you need to succeed. There are numerous herbalist programs in the United States that offer introductory as well as advanced herbalist certificates. However, since herbalist programs are not accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, make sure that the school you choose is registered as a legitimate post-secondary educational facility in the state in which it operates.
  1. Clayton College of Natural Health

    • Clayton College of Natural Health offers a three-tier, progressively-building distance learning herbalist certificate program. The college's first tier leads to a Family Herbalist certificate, and includes introductory holistic health instruction in courses such as basic herbology, basic nutrition, aromatherapy, home remedies and therapeutic nutrition. Upon completion, students advance to the second level to pursue their Consulting Herbalist certificate. This second level provides an intermediate knowledge of plant chemistry, herbology, human physiology and anatomy and pharmacognosy, or study of healing plant constituents. Lastly, students progress to level three, Master Herbalist certification that provides in-depth practical experience and instruction to provide for employment as private practitioners, herbalist educators or consultants. Level three instruction includes Ayurvedic, or traditional East Indian herbal medicine, Chinese herbal medicine, herbalist ethics, Native American ethnobotany and an herbal practicum. Clayton College of Natural Medicine is licensed by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education.

    The School of Natural Healing

    • The State of Utah registered The School of Natural Healing as a post-secondary school. The school offers five progressively-building distance learning master herbalist courses: family herbalist, nutritional herbalist, herbalist, advanced herbalist and master herbalist. Participants are given up to three years, three months to complete the first four courses, which teach herbology principles such as natural healing fundamentals, herbal tradition, herb identification, herbal horticulture, herbal preparations and herbal therapies. Upon completion of the first four courses, students attend a six-day certification seminar in Utah's Wasatch Mountains, where they complete a hands-on certification process that provides advanced instruction and testing of 100 herbs' Latin and common names, sight identification and medicinal value.
