How to Make Kombucha Drops

Kombucha is commonly offered as a health drink created by mixing tea and kombucha cultures. The result is a fermented tea that tastes something like sparkling wine. Kombucha may offer health benefits such as improved digestion, improved energy and antifungal and antibiotic properties. However, there are some risks to kombucha due to the alcohol content created by the fermentation process, so consumption of kombucha through as drops is an alternative to the tea. Kombucha culture looks like a small tan pancake and can be found at specialty gourmet stores or Asian markets. Contact a healthcare professional with any questions.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase kombucha culture and keep in the refrigerator. Choose a tea to use for the fermentation process. Popular choices include black tea, green tea, oolong tea or white tea.

    • 2

Boil four cups of water and turn off the heat once the water is boiling. Add one and one-fourth cups of sugar to the water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

    • 3

Add two or three tea bags to the water and let steep for fifteen minutes. Remove the tea bags and pour the water into a large glass jar.

    • 4

Add the kombucha culture to the jar, along with any liquid that may come with the culture. Add one-fourth cup of vinegar. Cover with a soft mesh cloth or other cloth that will allow for air movement.

    • 5

Place the jar in a warm, dry area where it will not be disturbed.

    • 6

Remove the culture after eight to fifteen days, depending on how strong you want the concentration to be. Place the culture in a clean plastic container with some of the liquid. Refrigerate the culture and reuse it to make more kombucha liquid.

    • 7

Strain the remaining liquid and pour into a clean container with a dropper. Place in the refrigerator to stop the fermentation process.

    • 8

Preserve the drops without refrigeration by adding alcohol with a concentration of 35 percent or higher. Keep the drops in a dark glass container with a dropper. Add drops to liquids or place directly under the tongue.
