Basil Herb Benefits

Along with being a tasty herb that is added to many different foods to boost their flavor, basil has some beneficial health properties that can aid in treating various mild illnesses or conditions. Basil is available in dried and fresh form as well as in essential oil form. Look for dried or fresh basil in your grocery store and basil essential oil in most health food stores. Basil should not be used for more than two weeks without the blessing of your physician.
  1. Basil for Hives

    • Basil contains natural antihistamine properties that makes it useful for treating hives. When combined with tarragon, chamomile, fennel and oregano, it forms a powerful remedy for treating the symptoms of hives. The effect of these combined herbs builds over time. Make a tea with 1 tbsp. of each dried herb in a large canning jar and cover with 5 cups of boiling water. Allow to cool slightly, then put the jar in the refrigerator. This will strengthen the infusion. Pour some tea into a cup, heat and drink two or three times a day during an outbreak of hives. To prevent the formation of hives, drink a cup only once a day. Side effects may include digestive issues. Cut back on the tea until those symptoms subside.

    Basil for Jet Lag

    • If you travel frequently and experience jet lag, basil--combined with several other herbs--can alleviate your symptoms. Combine basil essential oil with rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils to combat jet lag. Simply put a drop of each of these essential oils onto a cloth handkerchief and breathe in the vapors each time you begin to feel sleepy due to jet lag. Not only will this aromatic blend help to wake you up, it helps to fight off any germs you may have breathed in while flying, according to Dr. Pelechaty in the book, "The Doctors Book of Herbal Home Remedies."

    Basil for Heart Health

    • Basil also contains components that can protect the heart and reduce blood pressure. With minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium, basil can help to regulate heart rate. Basil leaves are also an excellent source of iron. Consuming basil can promote healthy red blood cells by improving oxygen flow in the blood.
