Herbal Cure for Laryngitis
Laryngitis is caused by an inflammation of the larynx, which temporarily causes hoarseness or voice loss. Typically, laryngitis is caused by strain from overuse of the vocal cords or from an infection like flu. Herbal remedies are a simple at-home solution to combating the effects of laryngitis.-
Helpful Herbs
-
Echinacea purpurea, astragalus membranaceous, inula helenium and withania somnifera are herbs well known for their antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. These herbs will boost the immune system, treat the current infection, as well as work in a preventative manner to keep laryngitis from returning. Eucalyptus, peppermint and marshmallow are also beneficial herbs for treating laryngitis. Eucalyptus and peppermint soothe irritated throats, while marshmallow coats the throat, keeping it moist.
Teas and Gargles
-
Tea with lemon will soothe throat irritation, dislodge mucus and restore the voice. Couch grass tea is also a good choice because it is an anti-inflammatory. This means that it will reduce irritation and help to clear phlegm in the throat. Chamomile, sage and/or blackberry tea are also known to aid in recovering from laryngitis.
Gargles are another valuable remedy for clearing up laryngitis. Using lukewarm water, add a couple of drops of either bergamot or tea tree essential oil along with 1 tsp. of salt. Stir well and then proceed to use as a gargle. Repeat this process two to three times a day, depending on the severity of symptoms.
