How to Train in Herbology

Training in herbology can be done in many different ways. Several Naturopathic Universities offer four-year and graduate degree programs in holistic health that include herbal studies, as well as smaller private schools that offer certificates in herbalism that can take from three months to a year. You can also study Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, which uses herbs alongside acupuncture as its main therapeutic tools and other traditional medicine programs, such as Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine and Native American herbology.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a school that looks interesting to you. The American Herbalists Guild has a list of over two dozen schools in the United States that train students in herbology.

    • 2

Check the website of the schools you are interested in. Read the instructors bios. Look over the curriculum and the costs.

    • 3

Find books that were published by the instructors or founder of the school you are interested in attending. Read the books to see if they have an approach that is attractive to you.

    • 4

If accreditation is important to you, check the schools accreditation status. Most TCM and some Naturopathic schools are accredited and regulated by state bodies. Most other herbal schools are not.

    • 5

Visit the school and tour the facilities. Talk to instructors and students and find out what their opinion and experience of the school is.
