Red Rice Yeast Pros & Cons

Red yeast rice is a Chinese product that is used to preserve color and flavor food. It is created by combining rice with Monascus purpureus yeast. Red yeast rice may have some health benefits including lowering cholesterol, improving circulation and reducing indigestion. However, some side effects from consuming red yeast rice have been reported, including liver damage and muscle weakness. Always consult a physician before taking any nutritional supplements.
  1. Benefits

    • Red yeast rice contains compounds called monacolins that may lower cholesterol as effectively as a prescription medication due to a reduction in statins. The June 15, 2008 issue of "The American Journal of Cardiology" reported that consumption of red yeast rice can reduce the chance of a heart attack by half. It may also relieve indigestion and/or diarrhea, improve circulation of the blood, and improve the overall health of the spleen and the stomach. Early scientific evidence has supported the theory that red yeast rice may improve symptoms of diabetes, but more research is needed, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Negative Side Effects

    • Consumption of red yeast rice may lead to some negative effects, including muscle pain and weakness, as well as liver damage. More mild side effects, such as headache, bloating, stomach irritation and/or dizziness may occur. Red yeast rice may also increase the odds of bleeding, so individuals with an increased bleeding risk should avoid consumption.

    Warning

    • Different brands of red yeast rice may contain other synthetic ingredients. Read labels carefully and check with a doctor about any questions you may have about red yeast rice or other ingredients. Pregnant or nursing women should not take red yeast rice. In addition, red yeast rice must be fermented properly otherwise it may contain a toxin called citrinin that can cause liver damage or failure. Red yeast rice should only be taken under proper medical supervision with monitoring of liver function.
