Hiccups can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. A variety of home remedies exist for these abrupt, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. Take a big drink of water and hold it in your mouth for several second. Gargle with the water and then spit it into the sink. Try using ice-cold water for this remedy. If that doesn't work for you, try using very hot -- but not scalding -- tap water.

Put a small, brown paper bag to your mouth. Breathe in and out of the bag several times.

Eat a piece of plain bread.

Swallow a spoonful of sugar. Wait several seconds to see if the hiccups are fixed. If the hiccups persist, drink a big glass of water without taking a break to breathe until the glass is empty.
