The herb saw palmetto may help improve prostate function and promote healthy urination. Saw palmetto may also reduce DHT, the hormone that increases inflammation of the prostate. One side effect of saw palmetto may be upset stomach and nausea. Other herbs that may reduce prostate inflammation include nettle root, saw palmetto berry and pumpkin seed. These herbs contain b-sitosterol, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. In addition, the herb pygeum may reduce prolactin production, which may be responsible for prostate disfunction. Very few side effects have been noted. Lycopene is another herb that is an antioxidant and may have protective effects against various forms against cancer, including cancer. High levels of lycopene may have an adverse reaction when used with alcohol.
