Carcinogen in the Blood Recent studies have found that the drink yerba mate contains Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are classified as carcinogens, or cancer-causing agents. While many foods contain trace amounts of PAHs, trace amounts of PAHs are not considered a health risk. Yerba mate, however, contained enough PAHs to be compared with smoking one pack of cigarettes per day.
Stimulant Effect and Cancer

Stimulating Heart Activity Yerba mate is a stimulant containing caffeine. When ingested in excess, caffeine can cause jitteriness and anxiety. In addition, high levels of caffeine can raise heart rate and blood pressure. A recent study at the University of San Francisco has linked cancer mortality with hypertension (high blood pressure).
Liver Disease and Cancer

The liver is extremely important in the detoxification of waste products in medications, including cancer medications. In addition, recent clinical studies have discovered a direct link between liver disease and the formation of cancer.
