Herbs for Alcoholism

Herbs fill a variety of functions. They can be used to flavor foods and make teas. Some have medicinal value and others have properties for healing or pain relief. Religions have used various herbs for prayer and meditation. Alcoholism can be treated with a number of different herbs said to numb the craving for alcohol as well as decrease the side effects of withdrawal.
  1. Kudzu

    • Kudzu grows wild all over the country, especially in the southern states. Kudzu is said to have properties that allow it to aid the liver in fighting off toxins.     Milk Thistle

    • Milk thistle is used in less serious cases of alcoholism treatment related to the damages that alcohol causes to the liver. There have been several studies that have shown a marked amount of improvements in liver function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The results have not shown to be as significant in cases of severe alcoholism, however.

    Dandelion

    • Dandelion is known to reduce the side effects of alcoholism as well as help in treating the liver. The root of the dandelion contains properties that help the liver rid itself of toxins and harmful antibodies. It enhances the body's natural immunities and stimulates the production of white blood cells. It is most effective in a tea. The leaves and the root can both be used.
