Oregano as a Remedy for Urinary Tract Infections

You probably think of spaghetti sauce when you think of oregano, but it has many medicinal uses as well. You can use oregano in different forms and fashions to treat and cure urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  1. Function

    • Oregano is an antibacterial herb. When used for UTIs, it kills the bacteria in the bladder and urinary tract that are causing the infection.

    Types

    • Oregano can be taken orally as an oil. Some people brew oregano leaves to make tea and take it that way. However, you can supplement these oral options with more immediate relief by massaging the genital area with a paste made of pounded oregano. It should be noted that most physicians advise against placing foodstuffs in this area.

    Features

    • Oregano oil has a strong flavor and should be taken diluted with water. If you brew it, then you may wish to sweeten the tea with lemon. Oregano paste is made of pounded or ground oregano and may be mixed with oatmeal for a thicker consistency.

    Considerations

    • If you have a UTI, cut out sugar in addition to your oregano treatment. If it is your entire urinary tract that is infected rather than your bladder area, using only a topical oregano treatment will likely not cure the problem entirely, though it may provide relief.

    Warning

    • Serious pain due to UTIs can be indicative of a larger health problem. Consult a physician if your symptoms persist after a few days of the oregano treatment.
