Uses for Cinnamon Pills
Cinnamon pills are touted as a healthy addition to your daily vitamins. Cinnamon has many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, aiding digestion and increasing the body's response to insulin. Cinnamon originated in Asia, in Sri Lanka and India, but is now grown worldwide. Its health properties have long been recognized, especially in traditional medicines. Table cinnamon is made from cinnamon bark and is rich in nutrients, both water-soluble and fat-soluble.-
Nutrients
-
Cinnamon contains manganese, dietary fiber, iron and calcium. Manganese is the most prominent nutrient, and is good for bone health and metabolism. An important derivative of cinnamon is MHCP (methylhydroxychalcone polymer), which increases the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
-
Cinnamon is thought to act as an anti-inflammatory. It can lessen muscle and joint pain, particularly aches related to arthritis. It can also help to reduce headaches. Cinnamon has also been used to stop excessive bleeding.
Diabetes Treatment
-
Cinnamon may help diabetics control their blood sugar. Taking cinnamon supplements can reduce the amount of insulin diabetics need, especially those with Type 2 diabetes. In a USDA research project on the benefits of cinnamon, it was found that certain compounds (called polyphenolic polymers--similar to MHCP) could increase the sugar metabolism of fat cells by as much as 20 times. Malfunctioning sugar and fat metabolism is a contributing factor to the development of Type 2 diabetes, so researchers believe cinnamon can help reduce this risk. These compounds also may improve insulin receptors, making them more sensitive to insulin absorption and utilization.
Other Benefits
-
Many people believe cinnamon can help aid digestion, especially nausea, vomiting and indigestion. Some women even use it as a pain reducer during their menstrual cycles. The fiber and calcium in cinnamon are helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease.
