Jewelweed is another of Mother Nature's wonderful remedies found in the wild. It is a well-known remedy for poison ivy but has also been used to treat everything from bug bites to razor burn to acne. It is most potent when the liquid found in the stem of the plant is rubbed directly onto the affected area, according to Hbci.com. If you want to have it around for use when it’s not in season, though, making a simple salve with the fresh plant to save for later is a viable alternative to using it right in the field.

Things You'll Need

• 1 Ounce Dried or 2 Ounces Fresh Jewelweed Herb
• 1 Cup Olive Oil
• Double Boiler
• Finely Woven Piece of Clean Cloth
• Hand-held Kitchen Strainer
• Small Glass Bowl
• ½ tbsp. Natural Beeswax
• 1/8 tsp. Natural Vitamin E Oil
• Sterilized Glass Jars with Lids

Steps to Make a Jewelweed Infusion

  Harvest fresh Jewelweed or purchase dried at your local health food store or herb supply company. Rinse fresh Jewelweed and chop the herb coarsely.

  Combine the Jewelweed with the olive oil in the double boiler and simmer on very low heat for one hour.

  Place the finely woven cloth inside the hand held strainer and pour the infused oil through it and into a clean bowl. Squeeze the remaining oil through the cloth and into the bowl.

Steps to Make Jewelweed Salve

  Wipe the double boiler pan clean and pour 2 ounces of the infused oil into the pan. Heat on lowest heat until warm.

  Add the beeswax to the heated oil and let it melt, stirring the mixture occasionally. Add the vitamin E to the heated mixture to help preserve it.

  Pour the melted mixture into the sterilized jar and let it cool completely before capping it. Store in a cool, dark place until needed.
