What Is the Difference Between L-Tryptophan & 5-Htp?

L-tryptophan is a naturally-occurring amino acid found in animal and plant proteins. After being absorbed into the body, it’s converted into 5-HTP( 5-hyrdoxytryptophan) and then into serotonin. Both have the same uses and side effects. The only difference is that L-tryptophan breaks down into 5-HTP.
  1. 5-HTP

    • The compound 5-HTP increases serotonin production in the brain. Serotonin affects sleep, appetite, pain sensation and sexual behavior; 5-HTP is used for treatment of conditions where serotonin is a key factor.

    Uses

    • Depression, anxiety, headaches and sleep disorders are sometimes treated with L-tryptophan and 5-HTP. It is also used in patients with fibromyalgia, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

    Side Effects

    • Possible side effects include heartburn and stomach problems like pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Sexual and muscular problems and drowsiness are other possible side effects.

    Contraindications

    • It is important that people taking antidepressants or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) avoid taking L-tryptophan and/or 5-HTP. Since all of them increase serotonin, there can be possible interactions.

    Considerations

    • There is a concern that both can have a side effect known as eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). EMS is a condition involving muscle tenderness and blood abnormalities.
