Side Effects of Artichoke Leaf Extract
From as far back as the 4th century B.C., Greeks and Romans have been using the artichoke as a health remedy for digestive issues. According to Dr. Michael T. Murray N.D. of Cell Health Makeover, artichoke extract is an effective natural aid not only for treating digestive problems, but also for lowering cholesterol levels, preventing heart disease, enhancing detoxification and protecting the liver. Most people tolerate the use of artichoke leaf extract, but a small percentage may experience a few side effects. While they are not usually serious, they should be noted.-
Gas
-
According to Cell Health Makeover, in a large study of artichoke leaf extract, about 1 in 100 people stated they experienced more flatulence than usual. Some people taking the extract were afflicted with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), though, and that may have been the cause of excess gas.
Gallstones
-
People with gallstones or other gallbladder maladies may be at risk when using artichoke leaf extract. Because of the artichoke leaf’s ability to stimulate the production of bile (a liquid stored in the gallbladder and secreted by the liver to help digestion), it may over-stimulate the gallbladder and lead to duct blockage or possibly even burst the gallbladder. Work with your doctor to get rid of your gallstones before using artichoke extract.
Allergies
-
As the Swedish Medical Center notes, those who suffer allergic reactions to plants of the Asteraceae family (multi-headed flowers such as the daisy, dandelion, chrysanthemums, thistle, marigold and ragweed), may be allergic to artichoke leaf extract. Allergic reaction to the extract is normally upon contact with the skin, and may include rash, hives, itching, swelling and wheezing.
