CoQ10 As a Treatment for High Blood Pressure
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a natural supplement that might lower high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause a number of heart problems and other serious conditions. Research indicates CoQ10 might be useful for this condition, but further study is needed.-
Research
-
The University of Maryland Medical Center notes several studies have shown a CoQ10 benefit for lowering high blood pressure. Its website mentions, however, that the studies involved only small numbers of people, and research involving larger numbers is necessary to accurately assess the effects.
Combining with Blood-Pressure Medication
-
This supplement might increase the efficacy of common treatments for blood pressure, including Cardizem, Lopressor, Toprol, Vasotec, Nitrostat and Nitrobid. According to the University of Maryland, participants in a particular trial were able to lower their doses of prescription medications while using CoQ10. Talk to your doctor before attempting this.
How to Use It
-
Suggested dosages for those 19 and over are 30 to 200 mg daily; consult with a doctor for appropriate dosing. Take with food containing fat to optimize absorption. Supplementing at night can enhance absorption.
Precautions
-
CoQ10 has no known serious side effects. One possibility is stomach upset. It has not been established if it is safe to use when pregnant or breastfeeding.
Foods with CoQ10
-
The following foods have small amounts of CoQ10: sesame seeds, cabbage, spinach, onions, carrots, mackerel, sardines, hazelnuts, pistachio nuts, soy beans, rice bran, vegetable oils and meat. Eating these foods can help meet your daily requirements, but therapeutic amounts require supplementation.
